A collaborative, multi-sessional project to explore and develop innovative, integrated teaching and learning in English across Key Stage 1 and 2 with Susie Spolander (PST)

Cohort 1 2016/17

“Thank you so much for the course, I really enjoyed how collaborative and focused on current issues it was.”

"Thank you for putting together such a comprehensive course which had multiple activities that could be used with a variety of children and teachers.”

(Nicola Townsend / Claire Wadsworth, South Stoke Primary School)

Inspirational! Thank you.”(Kim Merrison, Charlton Primary School)

“We really appreciated the fact that our needs were pulled together at the start of the sessions which then guided the rest of the sessions. We felt that our needs were fully addressed with practical and applicable ideas to use in class – BIG IMPACT!”

(Kim Merrison / Emily Hutt, Charlton Primary School)

Aims of project

Participants will:

  • develop subject knowledge, pedagogies and practice across the English curriculum, both within their own classes and the wider school.
  • identify how aspects of English can be developed and applied in the wider curriculum
  • explore, trial and evaluate effective pedagogies, strategies and approaches for teaching and learning in English
  • establish a professional learning community for the duration of the project and beyond

The project will launch with a full day’s conference for KS1 and KS2 teachers together. Participants will have the opportunity to analyse data and evaluate current practice in order to ascertain priorities to be developed across the project. Colleagues from the same school will be able to work collaboratively to action plan for their school.

The project will then continue with termly half-day sessions for separate key stage groups to address and develop their identified priorities, with interim tasks to disseminate information to colleagues and trial approaches, activities and resources with pupils.

Each session will focus on developing teachers’ practice in English, covering the associated subject knowledge and effective pedagogies and approaches of key topics from the English curriculum, as well as opportunities to drive improvement back in school. Sessions will be matched to the expectations of the National Curriculum and current assessment arrangements and will take account of local and national priorities.
