Tale Trail is a two year project in which Pegasus Theatre, Oxford, working in partnership with OTSA, is working with 6 Primary schools (Yr3 -5), using the arts to improve literacy, and to address OFSTED’s SMSC (Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural) agenda by enabling young people to embrace and understand cultural diversity.
Year One: World Stories, Cultural History & Performance.
The project began in October 2015 and ran for 11 weeks, culminating in a performance at Pegasus Theatre in January 2016. It focused on the young people in each school discovering stories from around the world, exploring the cultures they come from, how they are told and what makes a good story. From this exploration they then adapted and scripted a story so that it could be performed on stage.
The project was launched with professional storytellers working with each group to look at the culture of oral storytelling and how stories can be told as well as written. The young people then worked with two artists in an 11 week project to explore traditional world stories through drama with dance or music. The group were involved in the creative process, by interpreting the stories and by creating and editing their own class script. Across the 6 schools 140 pupils took part in the project.
